The labor process can be long sometimes. One of the easiest ways to keep progressing and find comfort is changing positions! If you didn't already know, laboring on your back actually sucks. It is not the optimal position and can lead to prolonged labor and fetal distress. However, there's an easy solution. Keep moving and try different positions.
There are benefits to positions both individually and with a partner. First let's look at some individual positions:
@mommy.labornurse on instagram is an excellent resource for this!
The key with labor positioning is utilizing differnet positions for differnt stages of labor. In the begining walking/moving may be very comfortable. As labor progresses, you may find it more difficult to walk and instead you sway or sit on the 'dilation station' AKA the toilet. Try different positions and find the one that feels right for the stage you're in.
Our next diagram shows individual and partner positions:
Having a partner there for labor can look different for all of us. It can be your life partner, bestfriend, parent, whoever you have and want in these moments. Make sure you practice these positions pre birth to get more comfortable with them.
Lastly, lets go over some positions you can utilize WITH AN EPIDURAL. Now this is one reason having a doula is so important. You may have nurses who are completely uncomfortable assisting you to get into a different position with an epidural. Or it could be ' against policy'. In these scenarios please understand your partner and doula can assist.
